Position after:

Teunisse, Dr F - Macmillen, A N [A00]
SCCA Championship, 1998-99
[Notes by Frank Teunisse]

1.d3 c5 2.c3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.cxd4 d5 [A Slav Exchange variation with colours reversed. According to BCO2, this takes the fun out of playing the Slav. Does it....?!]

5.e4! [Thanks to Black having played Nc6 before Nf6, it is possible to play this gambit].

5...dxe4 6.d5 Ne5!? [Although at the time of the game I thought 6... Qa5+ would lose to 7.b4! I am not so sure now, and think this may win for Black].

7.Qa4+ Nd7 8.Nc3 Ngf6 9.Bf4 g6 10.Nb5! Nxd5 [I looked here at 11.Qxe4. Now 11... Nxf4 and 11... N5f6 both lose to 12.Nd6#. If 11... e6 then 12.0-0-0 seems fine for White. But 11... N7f6 solves all Black's problems! So...]

11.Be5! [The bishop cannot be taken because of Nc7#]

11...f6 12.Rd1 fxe5 13.Rxd5 Bg7? [Better was 13... e6]

14.Qc4! e6 15.Nc7+ Ke7 16.Rd2 Rb8 17.Qxe6+ Kf8 18.Bb5! Qxc7 [What else? If 18... Qf6 19.Qe8#, or 18... Qe7 19.Bxd7]

19.Bc4 [The clue to 18.Bb5!]

19...Qxc4 20.Qxc4 b5 21.Qc7 Ke7 22.Nh3 Rd8? 23.Qd6+ [Black resigns in view of 23... Kf7 24.Ng5+ Kg8 25.Qe6+ Kh8 26.Nf7+ Kg8 27.Nh6++ Kh8 28.Qg8+ Rxg8 29.Nf7#. A nice 19th century knockabout!] 1-0
