Sorensen,H (2470) - Bohak,J (2395) [B06]
SCCA-100, 1984
[Notes by John Hawkes]

1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4.Be3 c6 5.a4 [The game Oim-Gipslis (Keres Memorial) went: 5.Qd2 b5 6.Bd3 Nd7 7.Nf3 e5 8.Ne2 with a complex struggle.]

5...a5
Both sides are going to castle long, believe it or not!

6.Qd2 Na6 7.f3 Bd7 8.Bc4 Nb4 9.Nge2 e6 10.Bb3 d5 11.g4 h5 12.0-0-0 hxg4 13.fxg4 Qh4 14.h3 0-0-0
Voila!

15.Kb1 Bh6
A provocation which White is to refute by some very finely conceived play.

16.g5 Bg7 17.Nf4 b6 18.Rdf1 Be8 19.Ng2 Qh7 20.exd5!
A simple exchange, but very profound. White locks the centre before manoeuvring, and it also opens up the line of attack to f5 and g6.

20...exd5 21.Ne2 f5 22.Nef4 Bf7 23.h4 Ne7
Black completes his development, but will find it hard to breathe.

24.c3 Na6 25.Bc2 Kb7 26.h5! gxh5 27.Nh4
The knight work has been especially pleasing. Now g5-g6 is a nasty threat.

27...Qg8 28.Nxf5 Nxf5 29.Bxf5 Rd6 30.Qc2 c5 31.g6 Be8 32.dxc5 bxc5 33.Nxh5
White's strategy has succeeded; his plus pawn is very strong and Black's bit of counterplay is to be self-destructive.

33...d4 34.Nxg7 Qxg7
[34...dxe3 35.Rxh8 Qxh8 36.Qe4+ Bc6 37.Qe7+ ]

35.Rxh8 Qxh8 36.Qe4+
A killing centralisation.

36...Rc6
[36...Bc6 37.Qe7+ as before.]

37.Rh1 Qg8 38.Rh7+ Kb6 39.cxd4
Black loses quickly in all lines. A wonderful positional effort. 1-0
