Word reached us via BCCA officials Alex Relyea and Neil Limbert that Eoin Campbell hadn't played any moves since November 22. Further research has uncovered the sad news that Eoin died unexpectedly, at home, on Tuesday, November 27, aged 64.
Eoin was a relatively recent SCCA member, appearing in our rating list for the first time in 2013. He was a prolific player, appearing in numerous SCCA and BCCA events, up to and including Championship level, plus many ICCF tournaments and friendly international matches. Eoin held two norms towards the ICCF CC Expert (CCE) title, and achieved his highest grade of 2220 in 2015.
Eoin's funeral will be held at Mortonhall Crematorium, Edinburgh at 2:30pm on Friday 28th December. Any current SCCA players or members who knew Eoin are very welcome to attend.

15 Dec 18 | SCCA Championship 2018-19 Double Tie
The final match (Mackintosh-Blake) in this tight competition has completed as a draw, meaning that two players share 1st place with 7½ points: CCM David Cumming and SIM Iain Mackintosh. Both players scored five wins, so the Baumbach rule couldn't apply, and both finished with identical Sonneborn-Berger scores of 28. So, no tie-breaking possible, and congratulations to both our winners! Also well done to Mickey Blake who finished 3rd on 6½ and Eoin Campbell who was fourth with 6 points. These SCCA Championships are like waiting for buses - as soon as a tie turns up, along comes another one!

06 Dec 18 | SCCA Championship 2017-18 Triple Tie
The final match (Murden-Blake) in this well-contested event has now been adjudicated as a draw, which means that three players share 1st place: IM Clive Murden, CCM David Cumming and SIM Iain Mackintosh. SCCA uses the Baumbach rule for tie-breaks, and all three players scored four wins. The Sonneborn-Berger method isn't employed by SCCA to further separate a tie but, if it were applied, then Clive Murden would top the rankings with 30; David Cumming would finish second with 29½; and Iain Mackintosh third with 29. Congratulations to our three winners, and to all the other players who competed in the most competitive Championship of recent years!

27 Nov 18 | ICCF Europe Amateur Cup Announced
Andrey Pavlikov, Zonal Director for Europe announces the launch of a new multi-stage tournament for players rated not higher than 2000, to be known as the EU Amateur Cup. It is expected that the tournament will be organised annually.
The tournament will be organized in three stages, played by server. Usually each group consists of 7-11 players in the preliminary round, 9-13 in the semi-final round and 11-15 in the final round. Each player plays one game with every opponent of his group simultaneously. Title norms will be possible at the semi-final and final stages.
Only players rated 2000 or below in current rating-list (2018/4) are eligible to play the tournament. Unrated players are not allowed to play. Players may enter in the usual way through their National Federations or, where eligible, via the ICCF Direct Entry system. Cost of entry through National Federation will be £3.50. If Direct Entry is used cost is 7.80 euros.
Registration will begin immediately and will close on 31st December 2018 to allow for pairings.
Allocation of players to the preliminary and semi-final groups will be made as random as possible; however, geographical distribution as well as an achievement of reasonable equality of the average rating will be taken in consideration.
The tournament starts on 10th February, 2019. Triple Block system for a 350 days event, with 75 days initial bank and 1 day increment for the first 50 moves is used, no leave. All groups will finish on January, 26 2020 at the latest.
Scottish players who are interested in participating should enter through the ICCF website as soon as possible. If further information is required, please contact Gordon Anderson.

03 Jul 18 | New System For Entering ICCF Events
On 19th April 2018, ICCF introduced new arrangements when players wish to enter new tournaments. Details were published on the ICCF Home page and a notice appeared on the SCCA website on 17th April drawing players’ attention to the new arrangements. Some Scottish players continue to make contact with Gordon Anderson to enter them in a new tournament. Under the new arrangements this is not possible; players need to go online and make their own entries.
Change is always difficult, however, the process is quite straightforward, even for those who profess to lack computer skills! To repeat the advice from ICCF, players wanting to enter ICCF organised events should log onto the ICCF site and click on the New Events list. Once the tournament is selected and the player clicks on the ‘enter’ button, she or he will be given a choice between entering via Direct Entry or entering via their National Federation. If the player selects "Enter Via National Federation", National Delegates will be sent an e-mail asking them to confirm that they have received payment for the tournament. Once payment has been received the National Delegate confirms to ICCF and the entry is made on the player’s behalf. Please note that details of entry fees are always contained in the notice which is placed on the SCCA website but can also be found by clicking on the Entry Fees webpage.

If you are due to receive an award and want to attend please advise Gordon Anderson as soon as possible. Players should note that, if they are unable to attend, Gordon will ensure that he collects all awards and arranges to post to recipients. It would be helpful if players due to receive an award inform Gordon to help ensure he collects appropriate awards for those not able to attend Congress.

12 Apr 18 | Message from Catherine Pyrich
Catherine has asked me to send this message to all SCCA members:
I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to respond, but I’d like to thank you sincerely for the beautiful flowers and kind condolences you sent to George’s memorial service in January. We held a lovely gathering of family and friends in Kirkcaldy to celebrate George’s life and achievements, and everyone appreciated the many tributes and messages we received from around the world. It was a very sad occasion, but we took great comfort from the respect in which George was held. Thank you again for your generosity.

01 Jan 18 | ICCF President's New Year Message
To all Correspondence Chess Friends,
As 2017 ends, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to you and all those dear to you for a very healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year. I also want to extend my sincere thanks to all officials and delegates for their devoted work on behalf of ICCF during the last year.
A major upgrade of the server has been released in December, surely the most important in the last decade. It will ease the daily work for many officials with the introduction of the automated withdrawal process and the enhancement of the adjudication process (players will also take benefit of it). The players will now be able to test the new Triple Block time control system, and I invite all of them to give us their feedback after a few months of test. If adopted by a future Congress, it will be a major evolution for ICCF, alongside the already implemented norms, titles system, and the development of the rating system which is still under evaluation.
Players and officials will also appreciate the new “ICCF Rules Document” which compiles rules information previously listed in 8 separate documents!
The venue of the 2018 ICCF Congress will be decided in January after the review of the bids submitted by three Member Federations (Poland, South Africa and Wales).
Last month, we suffered the loss of two friends, ICCF Honorary Members Carlos Flores Gutiérrez and George Pyrich. Many of you have met them during the numerous congresses they have attended ? both taking care of the ICCF finances during the last two decades. Requiescat in pace, dear friends.
In closing, let me once again extend to you my best wishes for the New Year. I hope that 2018 will bring satisfaction in all your endeavors, personal, professional, and chess!
Amici Sumus,
Eric Ruch
ICCF President
